John Day served as the Dean of Fine Arts from 1980 to 2004 after joining the USD faculty in 1976 as chair of the art department. He also served as USD Vice President for Academic Affairs during the 1984-1985 academic year.
An avid spokesman for the arts in South Dakota and especially Northern Plains Native American art, Dean Day was also a strong contributor to the Archives and Special Collections. The A&SC houses the John A. Day collections on Arthur Amiotte, Oscar Howe, and Robert Penn as well as the Gallery Logs from his tenure as University Art Galleries Director.
A “Celebration of the Life of John A. Day” will be held today, Friday, November 1st at 4:00pm in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. http://www.usd.edu/press/news/news.cfm?nid=2808
